Lodge a report when friend borrows your car. Yup, lodge a police report when you give your car key to your friend for borrowing your car.

This might be sound crazy.

Most of people including my friends shocked when I advised this to them. They seemly heard that I accused their friend for stealing their cars but I did not say that. I did not used word steal, rob or other words that have similar meaning. I said for borrowing.

This morning, when I sent my fiancée, I heard a radio DJ gives the same advice to his audience who lent his car to his friend for two days. But after more than a week his friend still did not return it back.

The same reaction gives by the audience. The audience said he manage to contact his friend and the borrower want few days more before he can return it. But yet, the Radio DJ still advice him to lodge a police report and that is a good advice.

The question is why? Why should anyone lodge a police report for lent his or her car to their friends?

The answers are:

• Database purposes. Remember, the car is under your name and when you lodge the report, you inform the police that the car will be use by your friend from this date to this date, so you friend will not be question on how the car can be at his or her possession at that time, or police will not accuse him for stealing your car.
• For protection. If your friend use your car for illegal purposes, the report can become an approve that the car not under your possession when the illegal activity occur or when you received summons during that period, you can tell police that the summons should be on your friend name and not yours.

Again, it hard to walk the talk. I face the same problem. Some of your friend will misunderstand your purpose or hate you for not trusting them.

This happened because some people at some place still believe lodging a police report is only to against something illegal or bad. Most of them still do not know the report can be use to update the police such as mention to them that you will not be at home from this date to this date.

So, to those borrowers, I hope you will understand and have positive thinking when your friend lodge a police report because you borrow your car.
